Voith Inline Thruster/Voith Inline Propulsor

The Voith Inline Thruster (VIT)/Voith Inline Propulsor (VIP) has been developed as a propulsion system for passenger boats, barges and large yachts. The aim was to increase the comfort for passengers in terms of noise and vibrations. This resulted in an axle-free, electrically driven propeller. The VIT/VIP is an inner ring propeller, in which an electric motor is integrated into the outer ring of the nozzle, thus reducing weight and space. There is no need for a shaft or a gearbox. The system that has been developed by AIR thus combines motor and propeller into a powerful unit. The innovative design minimizes noise emissions. The VIT/VIP excels by its high thrust and efficiency. It runs smoothly in any operating condition, allows optimum speed control, fast control reactions and can be easily retrofitted into the skeg as a main or auxiliary propulsion system, as well as a thruster. It offers a wide range of applications, from bow jet propulsion systems, control rudders to main and auxiliary marine drives.

Advantages:

  • Owing to the absence of gearbox and shaft, the electric drive power can be transmitted more efficiently
  • Higher thrust utilization compared to conventional jet propulsion systems
  • Practice-oriented construction, the utilization of high-grade materials and high-precision manufacturing are the basis for maximum operating safety
  • There are hardly any movable parts prone to wear and no seals
  • All electric components are permanently protected against the penetration of seawater

The rotor inside the stator is supported by patented, seawater-lubricated slide bearings.

As a result, the VIT/VIP can also be used in contaminated waters. If required, the propeller blades can be ordered and exchanged individually, even while the VIT/VIP is still installed.
