Computational Fluid Dynamics |
 |
| Voith Turbo Marine uses computational fluid dynamics in its hydromechanical development work,. The COMET computer program running on a powerful PC cluster is used to solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The appropriate calculations are carried out both for Voith Schneider Propellers and for the flows around ships hulls. Figures 2 and 3 show the initial version of a double-ended ferry and the same ferry after CFD optimisation. The stream flow lines indicated severe vortex formation on the initial version. Vortex formation is avoided on the ship's hull optimised by CFD, and the required power output thus considerably reduced. |
